Brothers and Sisters,
This week, our union brothers and sisters at AFSCME Local 3299, representing University of California service and patient care workers, are launching a pair of one-day strikes, and we need you to show up in solidarity!
AFSCME workers are protesting the UC system’s decision to lay off more than 130 people – including nursing assistants, lab and surgical technicians, vocational nurses and radiological technicians – at a time when frontline workers are already desperately short-handed.
The union has already filed charges with the state’s Public Employment Relations Board, alleging that the UC system broke the law by failing to provide notice or to bargain over its layoff plans or effects.
Workers will engage in a one-day Unfair Labor Practices strike at UC San Diego on Tuesday, July 22, and at UC San Francisco on Friday, July 25.
The California Federation of Labor Unions, AFL-CIO, has granted strike sanction to AFSCME Local 3299 for the two strikes, which will affect nearly 10,000 workers.
If you are in SoCal, the first picket will take place Tuesday, July 22, at UCSD Hillcrest Medical Center – 200 W Arbor Drive, San Diego – beginning at 8 a.m. and going until 2 p.m.
Let’s all stand in solidarity with our AFSCME 3299 sisters and brothers as they face off against the UC system and demand proper staffing and competitive job quality!
In Solidarity,
Lorena Gonzalez
