Last week, the Trump administration pulled the plug on a critical hotline for LGBTQ+ youth. For three years, anyone calling 988 — the national suicide crisis number — could press 3 to reach a counselor trained to support young queer people’s unique mental health needs.
Now that option is gone, John.
This isn’t just a policy decision. It’s a deliberate act that strips essential care from a vulnerable group already at a higher risk of suicide. And advocates across the board have called the move cruel.
But there are still other ways to help.
The Trevor Project, which has been serving LGBTQ+ youth through its own hotline, will continue to provide support to young queer people, but the loss of federal funding means their capacity has been cut in half.
