PBS features Save The Waves' work in Costa Rica
"On Costa Rica’s Pacific coast, the surf break at Playa Hermosa is a world-class wave—and the heart of a vibrant ecosystem where endangered sea turtles nest. Recently named a World Surfing Reserve, it’s now the focus of a bold conservation effort, as community members work to restore forests, protect wildlife, and preserve the powerful waves that shape their way of life."

Puerto Escondido community rallies to restore surf ecosystem after Hurricane Erick
The recently nominated Puerto Escondido World Surfing Reserve was hit by Hurricane Erick in June. Thankfully, damage to the town of Puerto Escondido and the homes and businesses around Zicatela were largely unscathed, except for one important piece of infrastructure:Â a fishermen's breakwater at the north of Zicatela Beach -Â long suspected of capturing sand and making the wave quality of the 'Mexican Pipeline'Â slowly degrade -Â was irreparably destroyed.
The organizations making up the Puerto Escondido WSR held a community meeting with the fishermen in the area to discuss what to do next, and, in an incredible display of community cohesion and compromise, decided to work together to remove the breakwater altogether.
The community organized a "tequio" which is an indigenous tradition that brings together the community in a work for the collective good, and removed many of the stones and boulders that make up the jetty. The WSR team is now working with the local municipality and the port authorities on a full removal process.

Proposed port expansion threatens surf ecosystems in Bahia de Todos Santos WSR
Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, is facing a direct threat to its coastline and marine ecosystems with the proposed expansion of the Port of El Sauzal.
We protect the places you love - where you’ve surfed, where you’ve experienced unforgettable moments in the ocean. That’s why the community around Ensenada has raised its voice through paddle-outs, protests, and grassroots activities, calling for a model of development that respects the environment, local culture, and environmental rights.
Save The Waves Coalition invites the international community to join these local efforts by signing and sharing the petition to stop this expansion project that threatens the surf ecosystems of Bahia de Todos Santos.
