Hello,

As Attorney General, my most solemn responsibility is taking action when the law is being broken — so once again, that’s what I’m doing.

Last week, I joined a coalition of 24 states in suing the Trump administration over its illegal and unconstitutional decision to freeze more than $6.8 billion in education funding nationwide.

Illinois alone stands to lose $219 million. That’s funding that goes towards summer school programs, after-school care, teacher training, English language learners, workforce development, adult education, and more.

This is money that Congress has already set aside to support students and families in every corner of our state. And now, with just weeks to go before the new school year begins, it’s been frozen without warning.

I am taking action not just because this move is morally wrong, but because it is unconstitutional and violates multiple federal statutes.

Let me be clear: the executive branch does not have the power to simply withhold funds because it doesn’t like how Congress chose to spend them. That’s just not how it works, and I won’t let it slide.

Which is exactly why I’m taking the Trump administration to court — again .
