ABC 7 Man charged with murder of 5-year-old boy found in Panorama City parking lot The 20-year-old man who was arrested in connection with the death of a 5-year-old boy whose body was found in a Panorama City parking lot dumpster was charged on Friday with murder and assault on a child causing death. Bryscon Malik Gaddis is the boyfriend of the boy's mother and is accused of causing the death of Elyjah Hearn. The boy's body was found in the early morning on July 12 in a parking lot dumpster near the 8200 block of Van Nuys Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. The morning of the discovery of the boy's body, LAPD Detective Meghan Aguilar asked for the public's help to identify the boy. MyNewsLA Driver who police say plowed into crowd outside Hollywood club has violent criminal history The driver who police say intentionally plowed into a crowd early Saturday outside a popular East Hollywood music venue was previously convicted of a hate crime in Orange County, a conviction subsequently overturned by an appeals court, according to prosecutors and court records. Fernando Ramirez was 23 when, on June 15, 2019, he entered a Whole Foods Market in Laguna Beach and sucker-punched a 26-year-old Black employee who’d been on a lunch break, breaking the man’s nose and severely damaging his two front teeth, according to reports at the time of the incident. When asked by an officer why he did it, Ramirez said in a conversation recorded on video that it was, in part, because the worker was Black, and that “he hated all Black people,” court records show. It is part of a lengthy criminal record that Ramirez accumulated in the years leading up to Saturday night’s attack. Prosecutors in Orange County have filed 11 criminal cases over the past 11 years against him, including several violent charges. Ramirez had been thrown out of the Vermont Hollywood club before returning to the area in a vehicle around 2 a.m. Saturday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. His vehicle hit street vendors and dozens of late-night clubgoers, according to police, causing several medical emergencies and stoking fear and anger among the crowd. Los Angeles Times LAPD seeks man accused of shooting driver in East Hollywood ramming that injured over 30 The day after a suspect plowed into a crowd outside an East Hollywood nightclub, injuring over 30 people, we're getting a closer look at the driver's motive and the man accused of shooting him in the chaos. Investigators believe revenge -- fueled by anger and alcohol -- was a possible motivating factor in the ramming, senior law enforcement officials tell ABC News. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Fernando Ramirez, was kicked out of The Vermont Hollywood around 2 a.m. Then, he allegedly got into his car, made a U-turn, and drove up onto the sidewalk, plowing into the crowd. In an update on Sunday, LAPD said at least 36 people were hurt, with injuries ranging from minor pain to serious fractures and lacerations. Law enforcement officials said toxicology tests will determine if alcohol fueled the angry rampage. Ramirez was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. If his blood alcohol level was over the legal limit, he could be charged with DUI. Meanwhile, Los Angeles police have released a photo of the man accused of shooting him during the chaotic moments after the ramming. ABC 7 South LA AutoZone ransacked after street takeover An auto parts store was ransacked in South Los Angeles following a street takeover in the area early Monday. Shattered glass and merchandise scattered all across the floor and the parking lot. The Los Angeles Police Department says this is something they have been dealing with recently. Officers first responded to a street takeover on the 4300 block of Main Street near Vernon Avenue at around 1:30 a.m. People broke into the auto parts store through the front glass doors. Tire marks were seen out on the street in front of the AutoZone. It is not yet clear how much merchandise was taken and how many people were involved. One neighbor said there were easily dozens involved in the incident. This store is not the only AutoZone to have been targeted in the area. Another Autozone in the Vermont Vista area was hit twice, also stemming from street takeovers. No arrests have been made but police are reviewing video from the store. NBC 4 $10,000 reward offered after hundreds of firearms stolen from freight trains in LA A $10,000 reward was announced Friday for information leading to those responsible for stealing hundreds of firearms from freight trains in Los Angeles last month. The thefts occurred in early to mid-June from Union Pacific trains passing through Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The Missouri-bound trains originated in Long Beach and "were hit in what investigators call targeted thefts," according to a bureau social media post. ABC 7 BWC: Man wielding 2 knives stabs New York officer before OIS Two Amherst police officers who shot and wounded a man on Saturday have been cleared of any wrongdoing, Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane said on Friday. The attorney for an Amherst Police lieutenant said the lieutenant shot and wounded a criminal suspect over the weekend because the suspect had stabbed a fellow officer and was acting in a violent manner. The man who was shot, Rayquell M. Grant, 26, of Buffalo, was arraigned Friday on one count of first-degree attempted murder, one count of first-degree attempted assault and one count of second-degree assault. Grant was arraigned before Erie County Judge James Bargnesi at Erie County Medical Center, where he remains hospitalized. Officers shot Grant after he charged out of a home in the 4800 block of North Bailey with two knives and attacked one of the officers. The officers were responding to a 911 call for a domestic-violence complaint at the home around 4:55 p.m. The Buffalo News, N.Y. Public Safety News Los Angeles Mayor says it's not a problem "at all" that city continues fire season without a permanent fire chief As Southern California's fire season reaches its midway point, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass says she isn't concerned that the city still doesn't have a permanent fire chief, five months after she fired the previous one. She made those comments on a Sunday morning appearance on CBS's "Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan," when Brennan asked her if she felt the city was prepared to handle another fire emergency without a permanent chief. "No, no, I don't think that [the lack of a permanent chief is] a problem at all," Bass said. "Our interim fire chief has 40 years of experience. In fact, he had just recently retired. I called him in, out of retirement, during the fires. He was doing the emergency operation center. So he stepped in, didn't miss a beat by taking over the fire department. And we are prepared. We do know that it's fire season." Bass named Ronnie Villanueva as the interim fire chief of the Los Angeles Fire Department in February after she fired former Chief Kristin Crowley in the aftermath of January's devastating Palisades and Eaton fires. The mayor cited a lack of preparation and Crowley's apparent refusal to conduct an after-action report after the Palisades Fire destroyed neighborhoods and businesses across parts of L.A. CBS 2 Electrical fire in Metro subway tunnel pauses trains under MacArthur Park Subway trains were paused on Sunday afternoon underneath the MacArthur Park area while crews worked to put out an electrical fire in one of the Metro tunnels, officials confirmed. The Los Angeles City Fire Department reported the fire at 1:32 p.m., sending crews into a subway tunnel between the 7th Street/Metro Center station and the Westlake/MacArthur Park station for reports of a small electrical fire. An alarm was also activated because of the flames, and LAFD said all ‘B’ (Red) and ‘D’ (Purple) line trains in the area were “safely stopped at remote station locations away from the incident.” No subway trains or patrons were reported to be “in peril,” according to LAFD. In a 2:15 p.m. update, officials said crews were able to safely access, confine and fully extinguish the small blaze. LAFD said the fire involved rubbish and the ‘third rail’ system, “which is normally energized with high voltage electricity to support train movement.” The fire burned in a remote section of the tunnels, but trains were still stopped while LAFD worked to complete operations. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
