Widespread polling place closures. Long lines with hours-long waits. A backlog of absentee ballot requests. Machine breakdowns. Apparently, this is how Mitch McConnell wants our elections to be during a pandemic -- an endless parade of failures. But it doesn’t have to be.
Over a month ago, the House of Representatives passed the HEROES Act -- a bill that allocates trillions of dollars to bail out our pandemic-ravaged country, including billions of dollars to improve our elections. But predictably, Mitch McConnell is keeping the Senate version of the bill locked in legislative purgatory.
Enough is enough. We’re partnering with the Leadership Conference, a 70-year-old coalition dedicated to protecting civil rights, and their campaign, And Still I Vote, to pressure the Senate and demand funds to protect our elections before it’s too late.
Will you call your senators today and tell them to pass the full $4 billion in federal election assistance needed by states to protect and expand voting opportunities?

Even in a pandemic, it’s important to make sure all eligible voters can vote and are not further disenfranchised in November. Congress must ensure that our systems are secure and work for all voters, especially when there is a crisis like the current pandemic.
But so far, they’ve done the opposite. By holding the HEROES Act hostage, the Senate has starved state and local communities of the resources they need to run free, fair, and accessible elections. We’ve seen this play out in Wisconsin and Georgia, where shuttered polling places and late absentee ballots led to confusion and long lines.
Seven years ago this week, the Supreme Court opened the floodgates for election officials to discriminate against Black and Brown voters by gutting the Voting Rights Act. We’re seeing the effects today.
It’s time to eliminate racist barriers to voting that are made even worse by a lack of funding. Congress must pass the HEROES Act now to make sure voters in every community have the chance to be heard.
Make a call to your senators and demand that they pass $4 billion in federal election assistance. We refuse to choose between our safety and our right to be heard.
