Herbert,
Congressional Republicans can no longer claim to be the party of fiscal responsibility.
Last week, they clawed back $9 billion in funding that most of them supported just a few short months ago. They voted to defund Sesame Street and emergency weather alerts for rural communities. They cancelled life-saving humanitarian aid and programs that help prevent future pandemics.
But as bad as these cuts are, they won’t put a dent in the $4 trillion in new debt Republicans also approved in the big, ugly budget. In fact, they represent just one-tenth of 1 percent of federal spending.
What’s even scarier is that these same Republicans gladly handed Congress’ power of the purse over to President Trump – who was the first in 30 years to sign a rescissions package into law.
I voted no. And I will keep fighting for our democratic values and the programs everyday Americans rely on. I hope you will join me.
