The Black Lives Matter movement is about justice. Fighting for black lives means fighting for real changes in the way police function, for the eradication of systemic racism, and for real investment in impoverished and criminalized black communities. Justice means real change, and at ISF, we are fighting for it.
Just this past week, our members attended Six Nineteen rallies for Juneteenth in San Francisco and Oakland. We watched and live-tweeted the Poor People’s Campaign’s Mass Poor People’s Assembly. Our members have called in to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, BART board meetings, and more. We’ve contacted our state elected officials to pass such crucial bills as the CRISES Act to fund community alternatives to police crisis response.
But while our members and many other Americans are out in the streets and on the phone fighting for justice, Republicans in Congress are more interested in sham legislation made to look like they care, but with no real substance. The “Justice” Act (S. 3985) contains no mechanism to increase accountability for police misconduct, does not enhance transparency, does not end qualified immunity and does not eliminate or prevent discriminatory policing practices.
Our allies in the black community and the NAACP legal fund urge Senators to vote down this bill, saying:
“In this moment, we cannot support legislation that does not embody a strong accountability framework for police officers and other law enforcement who engage in misconduct as well as needed reforms to policing practices.”
We agree - our Senators should vocally oppose this garbage bill.
Call your Senators and tell them - oppose the sham Senate “Justice” Act!
We’re also tracking crucial legislation on the state level. The State Senate adjourns on Thursday, so it’s important to call your State Senator RIGHT NOW about the CRISES act. The CRISES Act, which was recently sent to the California Senate, would fund community alternatives to police crisis response. It directs the California Office of Emergency Services to administer $16 million in grants to community organizations in the state to provide these community alternatives. We demand that our State Senator Scott Wiener support this bill.
Call State Senator Scott Wiener and tell him to support AB 2054, the CRISES Act.
Finally, we are continuing to call in to board meetings in San Francisco, letting them know we are watching their decisions on police policy. We know some of you don’t live in San Francisco proper, and it’s hard to keep track of all the meetings. Luckily, we found a wonderful website that lists upcoming meetings in the California area! Check out https://reinvestin.us/ for the list of meetings, and go to #local_action on our Slack to help us keep up with them!
