Signing the HALT Fentanyl Act into Law

On Wednesday, I joined President Donald Trump at the White House where we witnessed the signing of the HALT Fentanyl Act into law.

This important legislation permanently classifies illicit fentanyl as a Schedule 1 drug and provides law enforcement with the tools to crack down on trafficking.

As the representative of the largest border district in Congress, I know firsthand the deadly toll this poison has taken on our communities.

This bill will save lives.

Protecting Foster Youth

This week, I advanced the FY26 Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development (THUD) package through my seat on the House Appropriations Committee.

I secured several provisions in the package to support infrastructure, affordable housing, and transportation priorities, including critical housing assistance for foster youth transitioning into adulthood.

Click here to watch Congressman Gonzales' questioning of HUD Secretary Scott Turner.

In June, during a THUD Subcommittee budget hearing, I brought up this issue to HUD Secretary Scott Turner.

The First Lady Melania Trump Youth Foster to Independence Initiative was officially included in the bill. This is a major step toward ensuring every foster child aging out of the system has a safe place to call home.

Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute

This week, I had the privilege of speaking at the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute’s (CHLI) policy briefing series.

Telecommunications—from broadcast to broadband—play a vital role in our daily lives. I discussed the need to strengthen our communications infrastructure and enhance national security in today’s digital age.

I’ll continue working to ensure young Hispanics have a seat at the table—in policy, leadership, and beyond.

Remembering USBP Agent James Dominguez

Border Patrol Agent James R. Dominguez tragically passed away in the line of duty in 2012. To honor his memory, my bill to rename the Uvalde Border Patrol Checkpoint after Agent Dominguez was signed into law.

Yesterday, I was grateful to attend the renaming ceremony in Uvalde. Agent Dominguez’s service to our nation will always be remembered.

Road Upgrades for Shavano Park

I'm proud to have secured a $4 million federal grant for the De Zavala Road Project in Shavano Park through Community Project Funding---a major investment in local infrastructure and safety.

This project includes the construction of new walkways, dedicated bike lanes, and upgraded drainage systems, improving accessibility for drivers, cyclists, pedestrians, and first responders while also tackling local flood risks head-on.

I’ll keep fighting for smart, targeted investments that make everyday life safer and easier for Texans.
