Team,
Thirteen years ago today, our community in Aurora was forever changed because of a mass shooting.
Twelve lives were stolen. Dozens more were wounded. Families, friendships, and futures were shattered.
And yet, in the years since, we’ve seen the same tragedy repeat itself again and again, from Boulder to Colorado Springs, from Uvalde to Buffalo.
As a dad, veteran, and Coloradan, the fight against gun violence is deeply personal to me. As your representative, I’ve worked hard to pass common-sense gun safety reforms that protect our families and save lives. And Colorado has helped lead the way by raising the age to buy firearms, strengthening background checks, and keeping guns out of the hands of domestic abusers.
But right now, much of that progress is at risk.
The Trump administration is launching a coordinated effort to dismantle the very agency that regulates the gun industry. They’re pushing deep cuts to ATF, allowing gun dealers to destroy records early, weakening background checks, and making it harder for law enforcement to trace crime guns.
Just weeks ago, Republicans in Congress passed legislation eliminating taxes on silencers and military-style weapons while cutting Medicaid and food assistance for millions of Americans.
We cannot accept that as the new normal.
I believe in a country where our kids don’t have to grow up fearing gun violence. That’s why I pledge to honor the lives lost in Aurora not just with words, but with concrete action. I hope you’ll join me.
