Convoluted and laughably implausible conspiracy theories, such as QAnon and Pizzagate, have long been part of Donald Trump’s playbook, and his administration’s notorious disregard for facts has resulted in wildly misinformed policy and discourse. His recent refusal to reveal the Jeffery Epstein client list, however, has infuriated many of his most loyal supporters and sent his MAGA influencers scrambling for cover.

What dynamics are behind the widespread beliefs in conspiracy theories? Why do many fall for it? Is there truth to be found at the bottom of the rabbit holes? And, most importantly, how do these ideas affect the political struggle for democracy and justice?
