Texas > California

What to Know: In May, Elon Musk said that Tesla was filing a lawsuit against a California county for violating Constitutional freedoms and that the company would be relocating to Texas or Nevada.

The TPPF Take: California’s policies lack common sense and drive businesses and jobs out of the state but California-esque local governments in Texas may give Musk pause.

“Any attempt by Travis County politicians to increase labor costs and rules in exchange for tax incentives to move to the Austin area may make Musk think twice—and then consider alternative sites in the more conservatively governed counties adjacent to Austin,” said TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “Williamson, Hays and Caldwell counties are prime candidates for their access to infrastructure, lower land costs, lower property taxes and affordable housing for workers.”

The Legal Shield

What to Know: Sen. Mike Braun (R-IN) introduced legislation to reform qualified immunity for police.

The TPPF Take: Senator Braun’s bill is an essential step in ensuring states and municipalities properly train and equip their police.

“Long-lasting, meaningful reform starts with fixing qualified immunity to protect the rights of citizens secured by the Constitution while protecting good police officers,” said TPPF’s Derek Cohen.

A Little Trust Goes a Long Way

What to Know: The City of Austin unveiled a new campaign ‘Austin, Let’s Be a City of Us’ urging residents to wear face coverings.

The TPPF Take: This new order isn’t about COVID, it’s about Austin officials who refuse to let a crisis go to waste.

“The more effective way to protect public health and do the least amount of damage to our community is to provide as much information to the public as possible and allow businesses and customers to decide how to act on their own,” said TPPF’s Kevin Roberts. “A one-size-fits-all policy has proven to be devastatingly destructive to families – as Texas now grapples with double-digit unemployment – while demonstrating a questionable connection to public health and safety.”
