Do probiotics work? - The Economist (No paywall)
A DAZZLING menagerie of microbes live inside the human gut—by some counts a few thousand different species. Most residents of this gut microbiome are not the disease-causing kind. In fact, many do useful jobs, such as breaking down certain carbohydrates, fibres and proteins that the human body would otherwise struggle to digest. Some even produce essential compounds the body cannot make on its own, like B vitamins and short-chain fatty acids, which help regulate inflammation, influence the immune system and affect metabolism.

WorkWorkWorkFrench mural of Statue of Liberty covering her eyes in shame angers Trump supporters A mural depicting the Statue of Liberty covering her eyes in the northern French city of Roubaix has sparked a flurry of comments on social media over its intended swipe at US President Donald Trump's crackdown on migrants. Dutch artist Judith de Leeuw has described her work in Roubaix, which has a large immigrant community, as "a quiet reminder of what freedom should be". WorkChina Is Putting Data Centers in the Ocean to Keep Them Cool - Scientific American (No paywall) To grow its economy, China is betting big on artificial intelligence, cloud computing and other digital technology - and a big part of that bet involves rapidly building data centers to boost computing power. But these massive collections of servers gobble up growing amounts of energy, and each one cycles through hundreds of thousands of gallons of water a day to carry away the heat they generate.

WorkWorkTeaching Men Who Will Never Leave Prison - The New Yorker (No paywall) Its 2018. I am, for the first time, in a classroom at Great Meadow Correctional Facility, in Comstock, New York, a mens maximum-security state prison. There are sixteen students in the class. They are white, Black, Latino. A couple of them are the age of ordinary college kids; most are considerably older. The oldest of all, a man in his seventies, struggles to follow the conversation, using cheap, prison-issued hearing aids. All of these men have demonstrated their ability to work at a college level. A few, indeed, already have college degrees. Some have been incarcerated for thirty years or more and have been reading books all that time. WorkWork

WorkWorkWorkWorkThe real reason everyone's so mad over the Gen Z stare Somehow, though, the concept recently articulated on TikTok gained instant recognition from millennials, Gen X, and boomers, who describe it as a blank, if not worried, look as a response to a direct question or interaction. Sometimes, it can be a lack of any greeting or reply from Zoomers in customer service specifically. Further reports point to a potentially related trend, where the group born between 1997 and 2012 don't say hi when they pick up the phone.
WorkWorkWorkCan This Man Save Harvard? - The Atlantic (No paywall) The email landed at 10 minutes to midnight on a Friday in early April - a more menacing email than Alan Garber had imagined. The Harvard president had been warned that something was coming. His university had drawn the unwanted and sustained attention of the White House, and he'd spent weeks scrambling to stave off whatever blow was coming, calling his institution's influential alumni and highly paid fixers to arrange a meeting with someone - anyonein the administration. WorkWorkThe Conversations Doctors Are Having About Vaccination Now - The Atlantic (No paywall) For years, studies have pointed to one especially powerful influence over whether a person will get a vaccine: a clear recommendation from their doctor. Throughout most of her career, Nola Ernest, a pediatrician in rural southeastern Alabama, could reassure families who were hesitating to vaccinate their kidsin many cases by explaining that she had enthusiastically opted into the same shots for her own sons. In the past few months, though, shes spoken with several families who, at her recommendation, had previously immunized all of their older kidsand yet are now adamant about not vaccinating their newborn. I reassure them that I am still the same pediatrician, Ernest told me. They say, We still trust you. We just think a lot of the things have been pushed on us for a long time that were not actually necessary, or were harmful. |
