I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what it means to raise a family in this country right now, john.
To be a doctor. To be a mom. To be a woman watching what’s happening to reproductive rights across America, and to see how quietly, and dangerously, those rights are being stripped away by politicians who think they know better.
Ever since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, we’ve seen state after state pass cruel, dangerous abortion bans, some with zero exceptions for rape, incest, or even when a woman’s life is at risk. Nearly half of U.S. states have now banned or severely restricted abortion care. And in many places, doctors are terrified to provide lifesaving treatment for fear of legal action against them, while women are being forced to travel hundreds of miles for basic healthcare.
With Trump’s return to the Oval Office, and with extreme Republicans controlling Congress, the attacks haven’t just resumed—they’ve escalated.
- $65.8 million in Title X family planning funds have been frozen, putting care for over 846,000 low-income patients in 23 states at risk.
- Trump signed an executive order bringing back dangerous gag rules for doctors and cutting off global health funding to any group that even talks about abortion.
- And most importantly, Trump’s so-called 'Big Beautiful Bill' just cut all federal funding for Planned Parenthood – something the GOP has been aiming to do for years.
john, Republicans aren’t even trying to hide just how extreme they’ve become.
I became a doctor because I wanted to take care of people. I became a mom because I believed in building a family in a country where rights and freedoms would be protected—for my generation, for my son, and for every child growing up today—and I ran for Congress because I knew those rights were under attack.
I refuse to accept a future where some Americans have rights and others do not. Where my friends, my colleagues, my patients, and the people of WA-08 have to live in fear about whether they’ll be able to get the care they need to thrive, and even survive.
This fight is personal, and it’s far from over.
We have to elect leaders who will stand up to these relentless, calculated attacks on reproductive freedom in Congress, in statehouses, in governors’ offices, and in the White House. We need to protect and expand access to care, restore funding to trusted providers, and pass protections that guarantee the right to make personal healthcare decisions, no matter where you live, what you believe, or who you are.
Always in solidarity,
Kim
