Local 1018 Strike Leads to Raises and a Stronger Union
Members of Local 1018 who work at Lanterman Regional Center, a non-profit organization, won a three-year contract in late June after going on strike for 12 days. The strike began June 11 when the company refused to make an acceptable offer on raises and seniority benefits. After the almost two-week strike, the members won a 4.5 percent raise in the first year and reopeners in the second and third year with a minimum guaranteed raise of one percent each year and the right to strike during the reopener negotiations. Local 329 Members Win on Raises, Overtime Protection, and Insurance
Members of Local 329 ratified a three-year contract with Kennedy Valve on May 31. The contract includes the second-highest raises they have seen — a 15 percent wage increase over the life of the contract. They will also stay on their existing insurance, after a fight when the company pushed to switch their plan. One of the biggest wins was limiting overtime work on Fridays. This win came after the members wore “eight hour Fridays” shirts to negotiations. Read more »

President Trump launched an unprovoked bombing attack on Iran this past weekend in violation of the U.S. constitution, which requires acts of war to be authorized by Congress unless there is a threat of imminent attack, which nobody has even pretended was the case. This is not only a further undermining of democracy in our country, it also is built on a set of lies for political and financial gain, just like the disastrous Iraq war 23 years ago, and will only serve to make the world, and the people of the U.S., both less safe and less economically secure.

UE Members Join Southern Workers Action Summit
Over a dozen UE members, staff, and retirees joined four hundred workers from states across the South at the Southern Workers Action Summit June 13-15 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. UE General President Carl Rosen addressed the gathering, saying, “The fight by our members is both at the workplace and in society. We start in the workplace and build a strong strike threat. We have done it repeatedly this year and it’s what makes a win possible.
