My friends at Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia recently asked supporters to share their stories. So I’m sharing mine because Planned Parenthood has been there for me every step of the way.

I first walked into a Planned Parenthood in my early twenties to get birth control. I didn’t have insurance. I didn’t have a primary care doctor. But I knew I’d be treated with dignity and respect.

Later, I turned to them when I needed abortion care. I was scared and overwhelmed, but I was met with compassion, not judgment. Planned Parenthood was also the provider that discovered my fibroids, something other doctors overlooked or brushed off. That diagnosis eventually led to my hysterectomy and changed the course of my health.

I’ve been a patient without insurance. I’ve been a patient with insurance. And I keep going back because I trust them. As a woman, that kind of trust in healthcare isn’t something I take for granted.

I also spent six years working for Planned Parenthood. I’ve been on the frontlines of this political fight, in the clinics, in the legislature, and in the streets. I’ve seen firsthand the courage it takes to provide this care, despite constant threats and attacks.

That’s why this fight is so personal for me, and for so many of us.

At Roe Your Vote Virginia, we’re working to protect and expand reproductive freedom here at home. That means passing the Reproductive Freedom Amendment and electing leaders who will protect abortion access in Virginia, no matter what happens at the federal level.
