John, Exciting news: We just launched a six-figure nationwide campaign calling on pediatricians, primary care practitioners, and healthcare professionals across all fields to prevent tragedies by asking patients about firearms access and safe gun storage. The effort is a part of our This Is Our Lane initiative – a movement of healthcare professionals led by gun violence survivor and Johns Hopkins trauma surgeon Dr. Joseph Sakran. And it’s urgently needed. |
Nearly 4.6 million kids across the country live in homes with unlocked firearms, contributing to guns as the leading cause of death for kids in America. 76% of school shooters get their guns from home. Access to unsecured firearms drives skyrocketing rates of gun suicide. But thanks to our campaign, roughly ONE MILLION healthcare professionals will be empowered to talk to patients about safe storage and help prevent firearm injuries and death.
Already, we’re making a difference. After seeing our ads, the number of pediatricians who identified firearm safety as an essential public health issue jumped from 29% to 54%. We know that even a 20% increase in the number of American households practicing safe storage could prevent almost one-third of annual youth gun deaths from suicide and unintentional shootings.
As Dr. Sakran said, “this isn’t about politics or taking sides. It’s about clinical care and taking action.” Just as clinicians routinely ask patients about smoking or seatbelt use, they can also talk about firearms. Progress in the States: Gun Safety Victories in 2025
The Trump administration is slowly but surely attacking gun violence prevention on the federal level. And while we fight to hold the line, Brady and our grassroots advocates continue to make meaningful progress in states nationwide.
✅ Colorado Gov. Jared Polis signed 10 gun safety bills into law. This includes Brady’s landmark firearm procurement law that makes Colorado the first state in the nation to ensure that taxpayer dollars used to buy law enforcement firearms are spent only at responsible gun dealers — not those who break the law.
✅ Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson signed Brady’s priority permit-to-purchase bill into law. Now, a permit is required before purchasing a firearm — an evidence-based policy that will reduce gun homicides and suicides.
✅ In Delaware, five gun safety bills have been sent to Gov. Matt Meyer for his signature. These bills will establish an Office of Suicide Prevention, expand the state’s Suicide Prevention Coalition, help keep firearms out of the hands of those in crisis, and more. ✅ In Florida, we helped stop some of the deadliest bills in the nation, including one that would have LOWERED the age to buy a gun from 21 to 18.
✅ In North Carolina, Gov. Josh Stein vetoed a dangerous permitless carry bill that would have allowed anyone to carry a loaded, hidden firearm in public spaces WITHOUT a background check.
✅ And in Oregon, the legislature sent a bill to Gov. Kotek that bans rapid fire trigger activators, devices that make firearms even more lethal.

Honoring George C. Scott with Action
We remember George C. Scott, who was tragically shot and killed 29 years ago this week while attending a graduation party in his San Francisco neighborhood. He was just 24 years old and left behind two young children.
George’s mother, Mattie Scott — a fearless advocate and president of Brady California — has since dedicated her life to gun violence prevention in his honor, carrying a photo of him everywhere she goes. Over the last three decades, Mattie helped pass over two dozen gun safety laws. The results? California has some of the strongest gun laws and some of the lowest rates of gun deaths in the nation. The entire nation is safer because of Mattie and her advocacy.

13 Years Later: Remembering Those Killed in the Aurora, CO, Movie Theater Shooting This week marks 13 years since the mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora, CO — a tragedy that killed 12 people and injured over 70 others. Armed with an assault weapon, the gunman turned a night of entertainment and fun into a nightmare.
We remember the victims not as statistics, but as individuals with full lives, dreams, and loved ones left behind.
In the years since, our friends Tom and Caren Teves, whose son, Alex, was killed in the shooting, created the No Notoriety campaign — which challenges the media not to name or show a photo of anyone who commits acts of mass violence. Their advocacy has helped reframe how the media and public understand and talk about these tragedies.

Show Gun Safety and The Emmys |
This week, the Emmy nominations were released. And within many of the shows nominated, there is one common thread: gun violence.
The White Lotus was nominated for a total of 23 Emmys, and the newest season of the show focused on the deadly consequences of unsecured firearms. The Pitt, which shows how healthcare professionals are on the frontlines combating the crisis of gun violence, was nominated for 13 Emmys. Not only did these high-stakes dramas captivate millions, they also modeled responsible storytelling by weaving Brady’s Show Gun Safety principles into their season arcs.
Studies show that audiences adopt behaviors and attitudes of their favorite on-screen characters. Through our Show Gun Safety campaign, we work with writers, studios, and production companies — from HBO and Disney to CBS Studios and Adult Swim — to responsibly portray firearms on screen. To date, about 150 million viewers have watched content we have influenced, and we’re working with writers rooms of major TV shows premiering in 2026.
