Seattle’s Aurora Avenue N. gets 24/7 bus lanes, giving nearly 14,000 daily riders better service [ #aurora ]

Heads up: Major I-5 lane closures start July 18 — plan now!
Starting *Friday, July 18*, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will begin major *Revive I-5* [ [link removed] ] repair work on the northbound Ship Canal Bridge, and that means two northbound lanes of the freeway will be closed for up to four weeks.
Yes, it’s a big deal. Yes, it’s going to impact your summer travels. But with a little planning and the right tools, you can ease the traffic blues.
WSDOT’s project aims to give the aging Ship Canal Bridge some much-needed TLC. The result will be smoother roads and better safety — but first, the region must power through some serious traffic challenges.
Map of coming full weekend closure
*Here’s what’s happening:*
* All northbound lanes will be closed between I-90 and NE 45th from *11:59 p.m. Friday, July 18* *through 5 a.m. Monday, July 21*
* Two northbound I-5 lanes across the Ship Canal Bridge will be closed 24/7 for the duration of the project.
* The Express Lanes will stay open northbound from July 18 to August 18 around the clock to help keep traffic moving.
* All northbound lanes will close again to remove the work zone from *Friday night,* *August 15 to Monday morning, August 18*.
*Translation:* You’ll want to think twice about hopping on I-5 North like it’s a normal day. You’ve got options — and now’s the time to use them.
Taking the bus or light rail is hands-down the least stressful way to navigate around the construction zones. No parking hassles, no personally navigating stop-and-go traffic — just sit back and ride. (Prepare for busier-than-usual buses and light rail during construction.)
*Bonus:* Youth 18 and under *ride* *free* [ [link removed] ]on transit!
FlipYourTrip.org [ [link removed] ] is the City of Seattle hub for planning, adapting and exploring stress-free travel options, including incentives for taking transit. Skip the traffic. *The Bottom Line*
Construction is never fun — but a smoother, safer freeway system is worth it. Whether you’re commuting to work, heading to a Mariners game, or escaping on vacation, *a little planning goes a long way* this summer.
Mark your calendars for July 18, power up your transit apps and alerts, and give yourself some extra travel time. Puget Sound region, we’ve got this!

Seattle’s Aurora Avenue N. gets 24/7 bus lanes, giving nearly 14,000 daily riders better service
We’ve completed major improvements along Aurora Avenue N. in partnership with King County Metro, adding expanded 24/7 bus lanes from downtown Seattle to N. 145th St, the city’s northern limits!
These all-day bus-only lanes improve frequency and reliability on Metro’s highest-ridership route, the RapidRide E Line, for nearly 14,000 transit riders daily.
*The expanded bus lanes arrived just in time for people to give the bus a try in anticipation of expected additional traffic on Aurora Ave N. during the Revive I-5 [ [link removed] ]lane closures starting on July 18.*
The improved service is poised to make bus commuting smoother and more reliable. The bus lanes take the city closer to a bus system where a schedule isn’t needed, so riders can arrive at their bus stop and enjoy service every 5 to 15 minutes depending on the time of day.
*Project highlights include:*
* Over 600 new traffic and no parking signs installed
* New red pavement markings added to designate bus-only areas south of the Aurora Bridge in the northbound direction, to match the existing southbound bus-only lanes
* People driving and making deliveries can use the bus-only lane to make right turns or reach local shops and services
* On-street parking and loading shifted to side streets, with a few signed exceptions
* Coming soon: Refreshed curb paint at 28 bus zones between N. 38th St and N. 115th St.
We are co-creating a new design vision for the Aurora Ave N. corridor [ [link removed] ] with neighbors and businesses. It is focused on improving safety, mobility, and accessibility for everyone who uses this vital route. This work will shape the long-term future of 24/7 bus lanes and guide other key improvements along the corridor.
Transit keeps people moving. As part of our 20-year vision [ [link removed] ] to empower people to get where they need using low-cost and sustainable options, we have recently upgraded several transit lines in Seattle thanks to voter-approved funding. This includes:
* Improvements along Route 44 [ [link removed] ] and Route 48. [ [link removed] ]
* Improvements for the RapidRide D [ [link removed] ] line on 15th Ave NW between NW Market St. and the Ballard Bridge.
* Expansion of Rainier Ave S bus-only lanes to support Route 7 [ [link removed] ] as well as pedestrian access and safety improvements.
* Installation of bus-only lanes at five locations along the Route 40 Line [ [link removed] ], and future pilot of a freight and bus lane along Westlake Ave N
* Completing the RapidRide G Line [ [link removed] ] Project, which began service last year and is averaging over 6,100 weekday boardings. This makes it one of the top 15 routes in the system.
This comes alongside other work made possible by the Seattle Transit Measure including service investments to make buses come more frequently [ [link removed] ], distributing free ORCA cards to more than 10,000 Seattle Housing Authority residents [ [link removed] ] and hosting field trips to familiarize seniors with their transit options [ [link removed] ].
