John,
Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis have turned the Everglades into a barbaric prison.
They’ve taken a decommissioned airport deep inside Big Cypress National Preserve, sacred land to the Miccosukee and Seminole Nations, and built a massive detention camp designed to hold up to 5,000 immigrants.
They’re calling it Alligator Alcatraz, and more than 700 people are already being detained there. It’s being run by CoreCivic, a private prison contractor that donated more than $800,000 to Trump. Its operation will reportedly cost $245 per bed per day, adding up to roughly $450 million in expenses for the first year alone.
Democratic lawmakers have already toured the facility and reported seeing "cage-like enclosures," extreme heat, inadequate sanitation. Local authorities have already received reports of detainees crying out for help. This is happening in our own backyard. We cannot look away.
We’re demanding Congress investigate immediately. It’s time to expose the pay-to-play corruption behind this facility and the violations of human rights, environmental regulations, and Tribal sovereignty that made it possible. Sign on now if you agree.
We can’t allow this detention camp to stay open or let these contractors walk away with millions in taxpayer money.
Thanks for taking action,
Democratic Values
