Rep. Nikema Williams banner

Dear john,

Thursday, July 17th marked five years since the passing of the late Congressman John Lewis. Mr. Lewis always reminded us that the work of justice is a lifelong fight, not just a moment. Sixty years after he put his body on the line for our freedom, our struggle continues. This week, I joined the Congressional Black Caucus on the House floor for a Special Order, where we honored Mr. Lewis's life and legacy, and continue to carry his urgent call to action.

In these challenging times, when we are actively opposing Medicaid cuts that would impact care for 71% of NICU babies in the #FightingFifth. While we are fighting for the 49,454 households that rely on SNAP benefits and speaking out in committee, even late into the night, to secure a $25 billion relief fund for food banks, the fight must go on.

As Congressman Lewis would have encouraged us, to keep getting into "Good Trouble." May my friend and mentor continue to rest in peace, and may we forever honor his legacy.

Fighting to save PBS and NPR

First, it was Medicaid and SNAP; now it's Elmo and Kermit the Frog. Once again, I was up late into the night battling Republicans while they were working to rip away already-approved funding for public media nationwide. In the Fighting Fifth alone, there is approximately $2 million in direct CPB funding at risk for WABE, Atlanta’s NPR and PBS stations.

I voted against the $1.1 billion in cuts to public media, which will impact kids like my own, CarterCakes. I will never put Trump’s radical agenda over working families in the Fighting Fifth.
