What does your neighbourhood look like in 25 years from now?
The Red Rebel Brigade in Buenos Aires, Argentina
Imagine it’s 2050.
You, Rebel John, are heading back from a day spent at the permaculture farm, lugginga sack full of ripe fruit harvest! As you hum along to the evening song of the birds, you hear someone playing a familiar tune on a flute.
It’s been long, too long, since you last heard it - but something about it lifts your spirits.
Sure enough, a few moments later, you find yourself singing along:
We’re on a planet,
that has a problem We need to solve, get involved, and do it Now, now, now We need to build a better future And we need to start right now. As you finish off that final note, a big smile on your face - you flashback to 2025, when you heard this rendition of Bella Ciao in an email sent to you by Extinction Rebellion.
The world was well on its way to a climate apocalypse. Trump had just been re-elected and was busy hastening complete systems collapse. Far right support and youth mental illness rates were on the rise in most countries. Summer in Europe had yet again broken records, while people and their homes were being washed away in flash floods across the US, Kenya, and Pakistan.
Most governments and corporations continued to demonstrate that they truly did not care.
What happened then?
How did you end up in a 2050 where human societies are thriving in sync with ecosystems?
Where governance is in the hands of place-based collectives that put the voices of nature, elders, youth and historically marginalised people at center? Where economic growth has been decoupled from extractive activities and technology has become a tool for collective expression, rather than control? Where every human has inalienable rights to live a healthy life in harmony with the Earth?
And then it all comes rushing back.
We all came together. Millions of peoplefrom every walk of life who refused to back down.
Some of us fought against injustice on the roads, in front of corporate offices and in the courts. Others worked to regenerate degraded ecosystems. Many busied themselves with educating the youth to become guardians of the planet. Those at the front lines rushed to the sites of disaster and helped affected communities recover and adapt. Countless others did the slow work of displacing corrupt and weak leaders in power, redirecting financial capital and advancing the technologies needed for systemic shifts.
Rebels undertaking an education workshop in Mpigi, Uganda
As you will see in this list of actions over the last year - our rebels, especially in the Global South, are doing exactly this - building the
infrastructure of post-capitalist society.
1. XR Rwanda campaigned against the East African Crude Oil Pipeline with direct action and mobilization to stop oil extraction in protected areas.
2. XR Makassar restored coastal mangrove ecosystems while protecting communities from natural disasters and improving local livelihoods.
3. XR Ecuador and Brazilorganized climate and water education programs that empowered students to become environmental leaders and advocates for sustainable practices.
4. XR Batwa (Uganda) provided immediate flood relief to indigenous communities while building long-term climate resilience and adaptation strategies.
5.XR Bolivia organized performances and rallies demanding presidential candidates present alternative proposals to extractivism, featuring indigenous musical groups following Andean cosmovision to challenge existing power structures and promote systemic change.
Today we stand at the tipping point that we will look back at in 25 years from now.

Whether its £5, £20 or £100 - every unit of your donation empowers many times its impact. More information is on our crowdfunder page.
I'd like to be able to visit you, on your land, in 25 years from now, using slow moving, solar-powered trains, visiting all the other former rebel groups along the way as I travel from India to wherever you are.
The extractive system might be able to take away most things from us, but it cannot take away our imagination. With that, and solidarity, there's nothing stopping us.
So, tell me what you think
What happens after we win?
With love and courage,
