Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

Last week, while celebrating the DC Defenders on their UFL Championship win, I met young journalists from DPR’s Journalism Camp who were reporting on the event. And just yesterday, I visited DCPS students at Brookland Middle School who are spending their summer building robots and exploring medical careers. Both groups represent the talent and curiosity of our young people, and I know that across DC, thousands of kids and teens are making the most of their summer break at camps, DCPS summer programming, summer jobs, and more.

hkl;

Tomorrow, we’re kicking off one of our favorite summer traditions: the Mubadala Citi DC Open at Rock Creek Park. This tournament not only brings top tennis stars to our city, it also helps build the next generation of tennis players by supporting the Washington Tennis & Education Foundation and other opportunities for DC youth. It’s a great event for families, and you can find tickets and more information at mubadalacitidcopen.com.

That’s what a DC summer is all about: investing in our young talent and building for the future. And with our future in mind, I’m grateful that this week the Council also adopted the vast majority of my budget proposal in their first budget vote. That said, there are still important issues our city needs the Council to move faster on: predictability in the restaurant industry; stability in our affordable housing market; and urgency to finalize the plan for RFK. I look forward to working with the Council on these issues and working together to pass a final budget that lives up to our DC values, grows our economy, and does both without adding any additional burdens on taxpayers and businesses.

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowserair
