This week, Senate Republicans approved President Trump’s proposal to claw back billions of dollars of funding already allocated by Congress, including $1.1 billion for the non-partisan, non-profit Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB).

I voted NO because slashing funding for public broadcasting will have dire consequences for Washington and communities everywhere.

Public television and radio have long been a pillar of our communities. In addition to bringing quality journalism, children’s programming, and other vitally important information to every corner of America for free – public broadcasting provides lifesaving emergency alerts for public safety threats, weather emergencies, and more.

Now, without this critical funding, more than 1,500 broadcasting stations nationwide, including 14 here in Washington, could be forced to close.

I won’t stand by while millions of Americans, particularly in rural communities, are cut off from the news and programming on which they rely.
