Ohio Governor Mike DeWine Week in Review
For the week ending July 18, 2025
Saturday, July 12, 2025
Ohio Governor Mike DeWine issued the following statement regarding the work of the Ohio State Highway Patrol and Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) in Texas:
"I spoke with some members of our state teams in Texas this morning as they prepared to begin their fourth day of recovery work along the Guadalupe River. Crews from the Ohio State Highway Patrol and Ohio Department of Natural Resources are embedded with the Texas Department of Public Safety in three separate units, combing through the devastation left behind by last week’s catastrophic flash floods.
"Our teams – including several ODNR K-9s trained for search, rescue, and recovery missions – have been working long hours in hot temperatures, and I couldn’t be more proud of those who volunteered for this mission. When Ohio sees another state suffering, we don’t hesitate to help. Troopers tell me that the enormity of the destruction is unlike anything they’ve ever seen, especially in the area near Camp Mystic, but they remain motivated to do all they can to help.
"I thank our Ohio teams for their selfless dedication to the citizens of Texas, and Fran and I continue to pray for everyone impacted by this tragedy."

Governor DeWine and Lt. Governor Tressel celebrated the 45th annual Governor’s Lake Erie Fish Ohio Day alongside Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) Director Mary Mertz, ODNR Division of Wildlife Chief Kendra Wecker, and other leaders from the conservation and tourism communities. This annual event highlights the importance of protecting and improving Lake Erie and its fishery.
“Lake Erie is one of the most productive fishing destinations in the country, and Fish Ohio Day celebrates the amazing resource we have here in the Buckeye State,” said Governor DeWine. “We are grateful for the strong partnerships and sound conservation practices that keep our great lake healthy and bountiful.”

The event is co-sponsored by ODNR’s Division of Wildlife, Lake Erie Charter Boat Association, and Shores & Islands Ohio. Participants in the day’s festivities enjoyed walleye fishing on Lake Erie thanks to 18 licensed charter boat captains who donated their boats for use during the event.
“Lake Erie offers plenty of space to get out and enjoy a day on the water,” said Lt. Governor Tressel. “The world-class fishery keeps anglers coming back year after year to cast a line in the Walleye Capital of the World.”

Governor DeWine and Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (DEW) Director Stephen D. Dackin announced $45.9 million in Comprehensive Literacy State Development grant awards to 33 schools and districts across the state. The awards come from a $60 million grant given to Ohio U.S. Department of Education.
Under Governor DeWine’s leadership and through his ReadOhio initiative, DEW is championing statewide efforts to raise literacy achievement. These grants will expand access to evidence-based literacy instruction for students in grades K-12 and professional learning for educators, with a focus on enhancing literacy instruction for underserved students across the state.
“Literacy is the foundation for all learning,” said Governor DeWine. “By investing in our educators and aligning instruction to the Science of Reading, we are giving every Ohio student the opportunity to read confidently, succeed academically, and reach their full potential.”

Governor DeWine ordered the flags of the United States and the state of Ohio to be flown at half-staff upon all public buildings and grounds throughout Belmont, Jefferson, Monroe, Noble, and Washington counties as well as at the Ohio Statehouse, Vern Riffe Center, and Rhodes Tower in honor of the life and service of former State Representative Jack Cera. The flags will be lowered from sunrise to sunset on the day of his funeral, July 19, 2025.
Governor DeWine celebrated the opening of four new rest area buildings with ribbon cuttings in Union and Van Wert counties.
The Governor’s transformative rest area project is an eight-year effort to enhance the safety, experience, and accessibility for travelers in Ohio, while sharing Ohio’s natural history, historic past, and popular attractions. New rest area locations feature native Ohio plants, dog trails, rocking chairs, and Storybook Trails, which give kids and families the chance to read a Dolly Parton Imagination Library book along a short trail while stretching their legs.

“A safe traveler is a well-rested traveler, so our goal is to provide a safe, clean space for visitors,” said Governor DeWine. “While we have them here, we are sharing Ohio’s great story to hopefully spark curiosity and inspire more exploration in Ohio, the Heart of it All!” |
