Hi Friends,
For the third year in a row, Vermont suffered flooding last week. Vermonters’ homes were damaged, infrastructure was destroyed, and power for some residents was wiped out for hours.
Climate change means that we will experience more frequent—and more destructive—natural disasters in the coming years. We must face that reality head on. That’s why I’ve been working in the Senate to address this challenge.
- Improving our disaster resilience: When natural disasters damage our communities, we need to build back stronger. New technologies can and must be used to make buildings and infrastructure more resistant to future extreme weather.
- Reforming the disaster recovery process: Vermonters know all too well that the current federal recovery process is way too slow. Communities in our state that were damaged by the flooding in 2023 are still waiting to get the resources they need to recover. That’s why I’ve introduced legislation to reform FEMA and get funding to the local communities faster who desperately need it.
- Combating climate change: If we don’t combat climate change, the trend of natural disasters will only get worse. I have and will continue to fight for renewable energy and green policies that help our economy, lower energy bills, and remove emissions from the atmosphere to slow the impacts of climate change.
We must take action to protect our communities from natural disasters. I’ll continue to work with whoever I can in the Senate to make progress so every family is safer.
Thanks,
Peter
