Hello friend,
On July 11th, we celebrated World Population Day by focusing on this year’s important theme: empowering young people to create the families they want in a fair and hopeful world. For many young people, climate change, financial instability, job insecurity, and housing costs are prohibitive factors to starting a family.
Unfortunately, recent headlines have attempted to sound an alarm on a so-called “fertility crisis.” Political leaders like JD Vance and billionaire kooks like Elon Musk want to force women to have more children. Their weird pro-natalism is coupled with dangerous policies to restrict access to legal abortion and make contraceptives more difficult to get.
In its recent State of World Population report, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) identifies the real crisis: the lack of reproductive agency. Beyond reproductive rights, UNFPA calls for “the ability of individuals to make their own free, informed, and unfettered choices about everything from having sex to using contraception to starting a family.”
As a global community, we must remove the barriers to reproductive decision making to ensure people's true autonomy over their own bodies and lives. This includes preventing unintended pregnancies and enabling intended ones, and putting individual agency over national or societal needs. |
You can take action now to protect the right of individuals in the United States to use contraception and the right of providers to prescribe and distribute it by emailing your members of Congress. |
