The federal minimum wage was raised to $7.25 on July 24, 2009 — SIXTEEN years ago — and it’s remained the same ever since. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, $7.25 in 2025 has the buying power of less than $5 in 2009.
In those sixteen years, we’ve all seen the cost of living skyrocket. Housing costs are higher. Groceries are more expensive. Healthcare costs are through the roof. And yet millions of workers are still being paid wages that don’t even cover the basics.
Let’s be clear: If they wanted to, Congress could raise the minimum wage. But year after year, corporate-backed politicians have blocked every attempt to deliver real raises for working Americans. They have no idea what it’s like to live paycheck-to-paycheck — and they have no sympathy for anyone who does.
