![]() Team, the Trump administration just shut down the federally-funded suicide hotline for LGBTQ+ youth. We have seen many examples of the Trump administration’s cruelty since the beginning of the year, but this is beyond the pale, folks. And as one of the only openly LGBTQ+ members of Congress, I'm leading the bipartisan fight to undo this appalling decision.
Make no mistake: This hotline saves kids’ lives. LGBTQ+ youth are four times more likely than their peers to attempt suicide, and the hotline has provided suicide prevention services to 1.5 million young people across the country. There is no reason, beyond cruelty, to deprive these kids of a life raft in their moment of greatest need. Listen, this isn't just a phone line. This isn't politics — in fact, several House Republicans have even joined us in our fight to fix this. The fact is, this is about young people who are trying to survive in a world that tells them that they don't belong and that they shouldn't be here. And when these people are in crisis, it is our responsibility as a country to support them and get them access to the help they need.
Thank you, Sharice P.S. The Trevor Project will continue to operate its hotline for LGBTQ+ youth at 1-866-488-7386, a text line at 678-678 and a digital messaging service through its website. |
