ACLU Supporter, the cruelly dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz" is a moral failure, an environmental threat, and a fiscal disaster. Built in just 8 days on indigenous land without consulting local indigenous communities, in an environmentally sensitive area, vulnerable to hurricanes without a clear evacuation plan, this facility already has a reputation for abusing the immigrants being held there. We've sued to make sure every person detained there can speak to their attorneys – and while our lawyers fight back in court, we're pressuring Congress to do the right thing and block all federal funds to Florida's notorious Everglades immigration center.
With thanks for all you do, The ACLU Team |

ACLU Supporter, we just sued over the cruelly dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz." Reports of chaos and mistreatment get more disturbing by the day. Now, the people detained are being denied their Constitutional right to communicate with legal counsel. Attorneys aren't able to call their clients or meet with them at the facility – instead, they've been turned away at checkpoints and barred from entering. The facility won't even accurately tell lawyers who's being detained or whose custody detained individuals are under. That's why Wednesday night, we filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of the hundreds of people being detained at this facility – demanding immediate access to legal counsel. While our legal team fights this violation of our Constitution in court, we need your help to bring the fight to Congress. Congress just voted to give the Department of Homeland Security 170 billion dollars to expand its mass detention and deportation efforts. Tell your member of Congress to reverse course and immediately block any more federal funds to Alligator Alcatraz and other detention facilities.
This facility has been a disaster from the start, ACLU Supporter. There's flooding, mosquitoes, lack of access to water, and reports that the people held there are underfed, given meals full of maggots, barred from practicing their religion, and isolated from loved ones. Meanwhile, Florida state legislators attempting to conduct legally authorized oversight visits that could investigate these and other reports of abuse have been denied entry to the facility. All the while, people being held there aren't even allowed meaningful communication with their lawyers. Denying people access to their lawyers is a fundamental violation of our Constitution – and every day this facility stays open, more and more people suffer. That's why we're calling on the courts to stop this abuse immediately – and demanding Congress take action too. Thanks for all you do, Eunice Cho |
