LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

Hi, this is Representative Ann Fredericks from Sanford with a quick legislative update.

The Legislature has officially adjourned until January. During this time, Legislators are back in the district working on constituent issues and preparing for the upcoming session.

Legislative committees can meet a couple more times between now and January to work on held-over bills and studies in progress.

Meanwhile, Governor Mills is postponing decisions on 61 bills until lawmakers return. These include:

* Expanding online gaming rights for the Wabanaki Nations,
* Regulating ghost guns,
* Limiting local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement,
* Adding Asian American and Pacific Islander history to school curricula,
* And safely disposing of firefighting foam containing harmful chemicals.

She’ll make final decisions once the session resumes. The Legislature will then have the opportunity to uphold or override any of these bills that she vetoes.

One of those bills, in particular, deeply concerns us...

*The bill to interfere with ICE and prevent local law enforcement from supporting their efforts to remove dangerous criminals from Maine. *

Expect Republicans, law enforcement professionals and concerned citizens to urge the Governor to veto LD 1971.

There are nearly 400 other bills the Legislature carried over to January. New bill submissions will be limited to budget-related and emergency legislation.

Legislators were elected to serve you. Please do not hesitate to reach out to them if you have questions or need help with a state issue.
