Gil's Gazette, May 2020

A Note from Gil
Welcome back to the Gazette! Each month, I’ll compile the latest updates from our campaign in order to fill you in on the ways you can get involved.
Through this tumultuous month, I am reminded once again of the power of our community and the strength we find in our diversity. As our nation comes to grips with its history of racism and Americans raise their voices in calling for change, I feel the urgency of the times we live in -- and I understand that our government needs to respond to that urgency.
I wrote in the Orange County Register (read it here: [link removed]) that “Black Americans have been denied justice for far too long. They’re calling out generations of abuse, racism and discrimination. The American people are sick and tired of racial profiling, police brutality and a broken criminal justice system.” And I know that to be true because, for a month now, many people in our country have been protesting peacefully -- despite attacks from the Trump administration.
I’ve met with Black leaders in Orange County to discuss police reform and co-sponsored a series of police reform bills in the past week, including the Justice in Policing Act, which includes measures to increase accountability for law enforcement misconduct, enhance transparency and data collection, and eliminate discriminatory policing practices. As this important national conversation takes center stage, I have also been advocating for the people in our community most affected by the coronavirus -- including our Black community -- to ensure that our collective vision for justice includes economic justice and equal access to resources.
There is so much work to do in our district and in our nation, and I’m grateful to do my part. If there’s anything you have questions about, feel free to respond to this email -- a member of my team will reach out to you soon.
Thank you,
-- Gil
