VICTORY!

WHITE HOUSE HALTS HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF NEW TEMP-WORKER VISAS;
CONTINUES CHAIN MIGRATION PAUSE

PLUS - Your stories on how this downturn has hurt you, our members, personally

Hey, John -

President Trump's announcement yesterday of a big expansion of a pause on new foreign workers, and extending the pause all the way to the end of 2020, is a wonderful gift to the jobless workers of America.

Sadly, we've just discovered that those jobless workers are heavily represented among our members and their families.

We surveyed our vast membership last week and found that almost 40% of NumbersUSA members have lost work or had a family member who has. In fact, more than half of NumbersUSA members said that their own personal finances have been rocked by the loss of work or retirement income dropping.

By blocking the entrance of hundreds of thousands of new foreign workers, the Administration has provided a welcome respite not only to the country but to our own members.

You, our NumbersUSA members helped bring this victory about by your massive faxing to the White House, asking for this halt.

Our official press release began yesterday:

"NumbersUSA applauds President Trump's Executive Order temporarily halting the entry of certain immigrants and guest workers. No previous administration in our lifetimes has recognized the imperative of slowing the importation of foreign workers during an unemployment crisis."

NumbersUSA official statement
June 21, 2020

The President made a wise choice. It makes no sense to import more workers when 45 million Americans have lost work!

In the survey, thousands of you submitted a few words on how this COVID crisis has affected you. Here are a few replies.

"I worked in IT for 20+ years. They wouldn't let me do the work I was qualified for, even though there were plenty of positions filled by people from India. I ended up losing my job... I know first hand that they are taking American jobs, jobs that there are qualified Americans to fill. Corporations want cheap labor, not good workers."

-- Michael
Lumberton, TX

Michael, this is just the kind of situation Pres. Trump's new order is designed to help prevent, by halting the entry of new workers on H-1B visas. Now, brace yourself for a truly heartbreak story:

"I had a friend that had a restaurant, and during the last 4 months of being closed he had to let his 8 employees go and under the strain of a financial burden, he killed himself. He was only 39."

-- Michael
Grand Prairie, TX

The only thing I can say to you reading Michael's story is HAVE HOPE! I believe America will pull through this.

"I run transitional housing for recovering addicts. With the shutdown of the economy, I have clients who worked mainly in a restaurant who were dismissed. The ones that were dismissed have not been able to pay rent. I get to carry them because there is a moratorium on evictions; plus at this time because of their recovery, I don't feel that I could put them out in the street and reverse their recovery. So, when the economy does re-open, my clients will more than likely be replaced by illegal immigrants, which was starting to happen before the pandemic."

-- Marvell
Washington state

Members of Congress, I hope you're paying attention to what's going on out there. If you do not, NumbersUSA will be watching - and acting!

John, I know I can say something like that because I know that members like you can back us up. Our membership has always been there for us. But so many of our members can't. We need to continue to be a voice for people like Marvell.

If you're in a difficult situation like Marvell, don't give. Just make the most use out of what our donors and staffers have been able to create.

But if you can give, please consider how many of our supporters cannot. We need your help to keep fighting. Thank you.

"I saw friends in the medical field having salaries cut and hours reduced which in no way signals a shortage of workers in the field. Nurses, physicians, and all medical staff, once were respected for their positions and humanitarian efforts. But now they are being played by the administrations they work for. Corporations, not the actual workers or trained American population, are driving the narrative of a shortage of U.S. workers."

-- Clayborn
Concord, NC

Right, Clayborn. That's another reason I'm SO GLAD Pres. Trump is not playing along!

"I worked in the oilfield and since 2015 the construction work has slowed to a halt! My son worked the oilfield drilling and has lost his job this week! The businesses in the state of Louisiana are closing down every day, US people are losing jobs and housing! Will the government ever get something done for the AMERICAN people?"

-- Randy
Lydia, LA

Randy, looks like the White House just did!

"In my opinion, importing labor force is not needed to fill any jobs. We need to train and get everyone working, particularly in trades like plumbers, electricians, etc. that can provide a good stable income for families."

-- Rick
Manly, IA

In our survey, Rick, 92% of NumbersUSA members said they agreed with you! They agreed that America has a SURPLUS of capable workers, NOT a shortage!

"I was furloughed for two months then returned to work with reduced hours... while having to wear Personal Protective Equipment. I did not receive unemployment compensation during my two months of furlough, nor was I compensated from my employer. I sold my car to pay my bills and used my credit card to pay my rent. I am still behind the eight ball. Where are all the good paying jobs?"

-- Tim
Chico, CA

Are you listening, federal judges? Are you paying attention, reporters and editors? Tim sold his CAR to pay his bill and paid his rent with a CREDIT CARD!

"My Grandson received a degree in Chemical Engineering just in time to find out that there are no jobs and to compete with the thousands of laid-off workers in Petroleum."

-- Carol
Montgomery, TX

Exactly, Carol. America has a huge surplus of desperate workers right now.

"We are laid off and yet we still see Illegal Immigrants working at Construction sites full time when LEGAL Americans could be working instead. When we stopped and asked the Foreman, he told us that these guys work cheaper than you can and do not need insurance. This happened in Nelsonville, WV!!!"

-- J. & L.
Charleston, WV

Thanks for reporting this, J. & L. It reminds me that on top of the legal immigrants that come in to compete for jobs, there are millions of ILLEGAL aliens already here!

"My sons lost their jobs, and it's hard for them to find another job since their employer won't open for business anymore. My daughter also lost her job, and she hasn't been able to find another job either. Her husband really needs her financial help, since they have one teenaged daughter and a pre-teen son. They lost their home as well."

-- Jose
Oxnard, CA

The home repossessions are just beginning, Jose. I'm sorry it hit your kids so hard.

"It's not a financial issue for me but mostly about this FEAR which I never experienced before in my life. It's the fear for my 4 children whose jobs are deemed essential so they are working during this pandemic. Their exposure to the deadly COVID-19 virus is great that I pray every day they leave their homes to work."

-- Noema
California

Noema, I know what you mean. America's never been more afraid in my lifetime. It's not our style as a nation. We have to fight it.

"I'm disabled. I have MS. I work part-time to pay for medicine and treatment. No work, no meds. You do the math."

-- Carolyn
Columbus, OH

No work, leading to no medicine for an MS patient? What kind of country is this? You see, our leaders CANNOT stand by and wish this away! PLEASE don't make it worse by bringing in a million and more new people each year! (Once again, thank you, Mr. President, for listening on this!)

"In our early 60's. Own a small company. Our retirement plans have already lost 25%. We've had to use savings to get by. Had to take even more out of savings to help our adult daughter. She lives in Brooklyn NY and had to quarantine beginning March 1st. She didn't get her unemployment or stimulus checks until mid to late May. So we supported her for two and a half months... in New York.

"OMG. I'm afraid we're going to lose ALL of our savings and retirement before this is over. The thought of starting to save for retirement from scratch at 62 makes my anxiety go through the roof. My husband is working physically as hard and much as he possibly can. Our business is a small kitchen and bath cabinets and tops co. It's very hard work. I can see the toll it's taking on him physically and mentally. I never thought we'd be in this financial shape at this age. We were looking at 2-3 more years of working like this, until the Covid19. Now I cannot see any end in sight. Lord help us all. Thank you for the opportunity to tell our story."

-- Dianne
Asheboro, NC

Hang on, Dianne, hang on! At NumbersUSA, we're on your side! When I say "we're on your side," I know I can speak for you, too,

John, whether you've made calls to Congress, or sent letters or gave money to keep NumbersUSA running, you've helped Congress hear the story of people like Dianne. And Carolyn. And Noema, And Jose. And all the other people who have sent in their stories.

John, can you see why we're working so hard to help millions of Americans have a chance at work again? We must stand together. I close with this uplifting word from Virgil:

"Be strong and everything will work out. The biggest fear is the unknown but the American spirit will prevail over fear!"

-- Virgil
Phoenix, AZ

In addition to halting most H-1B (higher skilled) visas and H-2B (lower-skilled) visas for new entrants to the U.S., President Trump's new Executive Order prevents the entry of anybody on chain migration green cards the rest of the year, as well as halting entry of new workers on employment-based permanent work permits.

You, our NumbersUSA members, helped bring this victory about by your massive faxing to the White House, asking for this halt.
