John, the Florida Supreme Court just announced their ruling in Black Voters Matter v. Byrd — the Court upholds DeSantis’ gerrymandered map. 

To recap: In 2022, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis put pressure on the state legislature to pass a discriminatory map that deliberately split up Black voters in Northern Florida – voters who had previously been contained within a congressional district where they could influence the outcome of the representation of that district. This map has been in place for two elections, despite blatantly violating the Florida state constitution. 

The Florida Supreme Court will allow the state’s manipulated map to remain in place, upholding a far-right agenda aimed at diluting the power of Black voters in Florida.  

This is a major betrayal not just to Black voters in Florida who’ve had their voting power weakened, but to everyone who cares about the future of fair maps.

The DeSantis-drawn map was a blatant attempt to secure unearned power for Republicans, an egregious gerrymander. Now that a state court has allowed an unfair, clearly unconstitutional map to stand, we can be sure Republicans across the country will be emboldened to defy their own state’s constitutional protections for voters. 

It’s abundantly clear that we’ve got our work cut out for us to fight back against shady map manipulation. Rush whatever you can to help the NDR PAC fight for fair maps and a stronger, fairer democracy.

This decision is a tough one to process. The DeSantis-drawn map clearly violates the Fair Districts Amendments of the Florida Constitution — it was part of a playbook to create an artificial political advantage through map manipulation that excludes entire groups of people from fair representation. 

When Floridians voted to pass the Fair District Amendments, they did not do it with the expectation that a court would later side with anti-democracy actors like DeSantis to decide that those amendments actually had no meaning. By eliminating critical pro-voter protections, the court has opened the floodgates for more extreme gerrymandering — in Florida and across the country. 

And don’t get it twisted, John — this is a direct blow to the very foundations of democracy that America represents. 

But American democracy is the people’s democracy — and the NDR PAC is proud to be leading mobilization efforts in the fight against gerrymandering.
