European Greens ([link removed] )
Dear John,
Budapest’s Green Mayor, Gergely Karácsony, showed courageous leadership by working with civil society to ensure that Pride could go ahead despite the efforts of the Viktor Orbán government to block it. So, the fight for freedom, love, and climate justice continues, and we’re leading it.
From Budapest to Brussels and beyond, the Greens are standing strong and united. Whether it’s marching alongside 200,000 voices for LGBTQI+ rights in Hungary, confronting climate denial as heatwaves sweep the continent, or demanding action on Ukraine, we are present, committed, and persistent.
This edition brings you the latest from our powerful moments from around Europe. Because when democracy, dignity, and the planet are under threat, Greens act. And today, that means also taking a clear stand: calling for the immediate suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement and a full weapons embargo on Israel.
As this newsletter is the last one before the summer starts, we wish you restful time with your friends and family. Stay hydrated and enjoy nature. Most importantly, charge your batteries so after summer you are ready to continue the fight with us.
We made history in Budapest! 🌈
Over 200,000 people marched together for freedom, love and equal rights in Budapest Pride. It was a great success for civil society, and the LGBTQI+ community. And it was a disaster for Viktor Orbán who tried to silence the LGBTQI+ community in Hungary.
More than 200 Greens ([link removed] ) from across Europe have travelled to Budapest to stand for freedom of speech, freedom to love who you love and freedom to protest.
Vula Tsetsi, Co-Chair of the EGP, comments: “Despite Viktor Orbán's far-right government’s attempts to suppress the event, the Pride march stood as a proud testament to democratic resistance, in Hungary and across Europe. This year’s Budapest Pride became a beacon of hope. People from across Europe stood shoulder to shoulder with the Hungarian LGBTIQ community, showing that love, democracy and freedom are stronger than the hateful far right that tries to divide and silence us.”
“We are immensely proud of Budapest’s Green Mayor, Gergely Karácsony, who showed courageous leadership by making Pride a municipal event and ensuring that the march could go ahead despite the efforts of the Orbán government to block it. This act of protection was critical, especially when Orbán authorised far-right counter-protests.” Ciarán Cuffe, co-chair of the EGP said ([link removed] ) .
May this be a message to oppressors everywhere in Europe: you can’t silence a rainbow. 🌈
We call for a full embargo on arms and equipment exports to Israel.
We also urge the European Commission and Member States to immediately suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement.
In the face of the dramatic and inhumane situation in Palestine, with tens of thousands killed, and subjected to violence and bombardment to access meagre food supplies, there is no time to wait.
The government of Prime Minister Netanyahu and the Israeli military are responsible for some of the gravest and most blatant violations of international law and human rights in recent memory. They must be held accountable.
We repeat our demands for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, full legal accountability, and unhindered humanitarian access.
The credibility of the European Union, and its commitment to peace, human dignity, and international law, is on the line.
Enough is enough.
Heatwaves. Brought to you by fossil fuels.
Over the last weeks Europe experienced some brutal heatwaves. Southern France, Spain, Italy are already hitting temperatures above 40°C. There are wildfires in Germany, Greece and Turkey. People are struggling to cope.
And yet, we still hear from right-wing politicians “that it’s just summer.” It’s not. This is the climate crisis, courtesy of the fossil fuels industry. It’s not normal. Climate action and the rolling out of the Green Deal must remain the top priority for the EU. Heatwaves don’t take breaks. Right-wing politicians calling to ‘pause’ climate action and the Green Deal, are committing a fatal mistake.

Greens condemn Robert Fico’s veto
The news has been dominated by Russia’s bombardments of Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, the heaviest since Russia’s full -scale invasion began in February 2022. The European Green Party is deeply shocked that Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, used his unilateral veto against the 18th EU sanctions package against Russia. EGP co-chair Vula Tsetsi said: ‘Fico’s veto confirms what many feared: he is acting as Russia’s Trojan horse within the European Council.’

Congratulations to Leonore Gewessler, the new leader of the Austrian Greens
We congratulate Leonore Gewessler, who has been elected as Die Grünen’s new party leader. She played a crucial rule in the final adoption of the Nature Restoration Law and is the queen behind the #KlimaTicket, a yearly public transport pass that offers unlimited public transport services access.
💚 We are looking forward to continuing our fight for a Greener Europe together!
Meeting with the leadership of SF in Denmark
Our co-chairs, Ciarán Cuffe and Vula Tsetsi, together with Secretary General Benedetta De Marte, met with SF’s party leader Pia Olsen Dyhr. They discussed upcoming local elections and the Danish EU Presidency as well as wider common vision of the future of Europe.
Moreover, European Greens leadership and team took part in the Greens/EFA retreat, where we have discussed some of the current trends, geopolitical situation and Green's’ plans for the rest of the year.
“We must continue to fight for what is right.”
These were the parting words of Alexander Langer, 30 years ago.
🇮🇹 Alexander was a prominent figure in the Green movement, founding the Italian Greens, being a key part of founding the European Greens and fighting for climate justice and for peace at local, national and European levels.
More than ever, his fight for peace, the rights of minorities and the environment must be an inspiration to us all.
Dialogue, collaboration, profound economic and social change: those are the solutions for a sustainable transition.
The future can still be Green and peaceful, if we have the courage to fight for it.

Israel is committing war crimes on a massive scale. To name a few: using starvation as a weapon of war, resulting in the International Criminal Court of Justice ruling that famine is setting in. Meanwhile, Israel is blocking all possibilities of aid entering the Gaza Strip. ] In the northern region of Gaza, over 70% of the Palestinian population is projected to suffer from a level 5 IPC status, indicating a state of Catastrophe/Famine, while the remaining 30% are projected at a level 4 status (Emergency). Next to that, Israel has killed civilians while they were collecting food aid.
Of course, Hamas must immediately release the civilian hostages - just as Israel should release Palestinians who have been wrongfully and arbitrarily detained both before and since October 7th. Israel should take meaningful steps to secure the release of the people held hostage, instead of using them as pretext to indiscriminately harm Palestinian civilians through military strikes, siege tactics, mass forced displacement, and the establishment and expansion of illegal settlements.

Freedom as we used to conceive of it is under pressure from all sides. Traditional notions of liberty face unprecedented challenges from authoritarian forces, technological manipulation, and systemic injustices exposed by recent crises. The new edition of the Green European Journal, Unbound: The Battle Over Freedom ([link removed] ) , explores how the Green movement, despite being rooted in a radical critique of all forms of authority and domination, is currently losing ground in this struggle. To win this battle over meaning and ownership, progressives must mobilise around freedom's enduring emotional appeal.

Tax the tech bros: Make them pay
People in Europe work hard to earn a living and to provide for their families. But ultra-rich tech bros owning digital giants are just raking in record breaking profits, without contributing to society - all with the support from US President Donald Trump. It is time to stand up to them and make them pay (a Digital Services Tax).

Adoption of the opinion of Greens in CoR co-president Tine Radinja (SI/Greens) on Intergenerational Fairness: A Local and Regional Approach to Building Inclusive and Sustainable Societies.
Local and regional leaders urge the European Union to place intergenerational fairness (IGF) at the heart of its policymaking, In the opinion ([link removed] ) led by Tine Radinja (SI/Greens), Mayor of Škofja Loka and his expert Anna Holtkamp from the European Youth Forum. They call for long-term, future-proof policies on public finances, environmental protection, and social care for current and future generations to thrive, stressing that responses to today’s social and environmental challenges must account for the rights, well-being, and opportunities of future generations.
"What kind of legacy do we leave if we fail to account for the voices of the future? Intergenerational fairness is our promise to tomorrow — a bold commitment to empower youth, safeguard the rights of future generations, and build a just, sustainable world where all can thrive, not merely survive."
