John, the polls just closed in New York. Voters are still waiting in line to cast their ballots in Kentucky. We know many of you are watching closely to see if WFP candidates like Jamaal Bowman and Charles Booker will defeat their corporate-backed opponents.
While we're seeing a lot of encouraging signs, here’s what we know for sure as of right now:
-
It will probably be a while until we have the full results. Many voters in New York and Kentucky chose to vote by mail because of the COVID-19 pandemic. New York City's Board of Elections won’t start counting those ballots until next week, and almost all of Kentucky’s 120 counties have decided to wait until June 30 to release their full results.
-
Voters met lots of challenges at the polls. In New York, many voters who requested absentee ballots never received them. And in Kentucky, Charles Booker had to file an emergency injunction late today to keep Louisville’s only polling location open until 9pm after hundreds of voters got stuck in traffic trying to get there.
-
We need to prepare for the fights ahead. While we work to bring victory home in NY and KY, WFP candidates are also running in hotly contested primaries over the next few weeks in states including Colorado and New Jersey. We're launching a Vote at Home initiative to fight to make it easier to vote-by-mail during this pandemic. And Election Day in November is only 133 days away.
While we wait for results to come in, can you chip in tonight so that together, we can bring WFP champions across the finish line over the next week, in the remaining primaries, and in the general election in November?
We couldn't do any of this without you, John. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all you've done already, and for being in this movement with us,
Team WFP
