Hi all,
In the early hours of the morning on Wednesday, July 2, the Tempe City Council chose to approve a new ordinance placing significant restrictions on public gatherings of 30 people or more. This incredibly disappointing vote came despite hours of testimony against the proposed ordinance from more than 70 people, including many Tempe residents and DSA members.
The ordinance is part of a broader crackdown on anyone trying to provide support to our unhoused neighbors. In February, our chapter's own Really Really Free Market, which had been running without issue for years, was shut down by the cops. The same thing has happened to many other community and mutual aid groups all over Tempe.
Our chapter is now in the midst of a major effort to collect 3,000+ signatures before August 1 to refer the proposed ordinance to the ballot and block it from going into effect until voters have a say. And we need your help!
Can you join us for a canvass this weekend?
