Hey friend,

Five years ago today, we lost a Georgian trailblazer who paved our country’s path toward justice and freedom — and fought tirelessly to protect the sacred right to vote.

The late Congressman John Lewis represented Georgia's 5th Congressional District from 1987 until his death, and dedicated his life to making the promise of democracy a reality.

Despite the constant threats of violence by police, white supremacists, and state-sanctioned violence on various occasions while peacefully protesting, Congressman Lewis continued to rise in the face of adversity to ensure that Black folks had equal access to the ballot.

Congressman Lewis was a major force in the Civil Rights Movement: as a Freedom Rider, chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, and one of the organizers of the March on Washington. His tireless commitment to ending racial segregation helped pave the way for the Voting Rights Act of 1965, and his legacy endures as we continue the fight for his vision of a more just democracy.

As Congressman Lewis once said:

“Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month, or a year, it is the struggle of a lifetime. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble.”

Let us continue to make good trouble in Congressman Lewis’ honor.
