Bayer has an $11 billion problem.

People are using the courts to force the agrochemical giant to reckon with the health impacts of its flagship product, RoundUp. Instead of yanking the product, which the World Health Organization has found to be a probable carcinogen, the corporation is doubling down and pushing for state and federal legislation to protect its profits.

This week, dangerous language was included in the next big Congressional spending bill that would prevent the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from improving warning labels on pesticides.

Bayer is behind a slew of state bills introduced across the country this year that would strip individuals of our right to sue when we allege pesticide companies have made us sick.

And now, Bayer is pushing for a special carveout in federal law to protect them from regulation. The next spending bill just released in the House of Representatives has one short but potentially devastating paragraph in it — Section 453 — that would prevent EPA from improving the rules for warning labels on pesticides.

Pesticides aren’t only bad for our environment and our food system — they’re dangerous to our health. And we know the status quo isn’t protective — plenty of pesticides that won EPA approval and carry warning labels can and do make people sick.

Our legislators have no business passing legislation to shield a chemical company worth over $30 billion from accountability. It's despicable.

This would be an outrageous giveaway to the agribusiness industry at the expense of our health. Tell your Representative: Oppose the Cancer Gag Act in the EPA spending bill!

With the help of Food & Water Watch members like you, we’ve already defeated this bill in Iowa,* and we are continuing to fight in North Carolina. Legislators in Idaho, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Wyoming have already said No Way! and sent Bayer packing.

But if Congress passes this spending bill with the Cancer Gag Act provision intact, it will threaten our wins at the state level while allowing for the most harmful pesticides to remain in use, despite evolving science or emerging evidence of harm.

We need to send a clear message to Congress. This provision needs to be removed, and NO members of Congress should support special carve-outs that protect pesticide companies from labeling or regulation.
