Pregnant women in rural communities are especially at risk here. When cuts happen, OB-GYN departments are usually the first to go, and these services are outsourced to larger hospitals further away. Pregnancy-related mortality is 1.7 times higher for people in rural communities in comparison to people living in large, urban centers.

Several counties here in Arizona already have fewer than one provider per every 10,000 women — a disastrous discrepancy that will lead to more deaths of pregnant moms and babies.
