Proposition 12 mandates minimum space requirements for pregnant pigs, laying hens, and calves raised for veal. It has been a beacon of hope in our ongoing fight for animals trapped in the food system. The Supreme Court upheld its constitutionality in 2023.
Now the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), under President Trump, has filed a lawsuit that directly targets Proposition 12, raising the possibility of undermining significant progress we've made for animals.
In addition to the DOJ's lawsuit, a "Farm Bill 2.0" may include language that could undo this monumental state law.
