BREAKING NEWS: Florida Supreme Court upholds DeSantis’ gerrymandered map — shattering voting rights for Black voters The fight for fair maps is far from over. And we need your support. |
Folks,
The Florida Supreme Court just issued a ruling in Black Voters Matter v. Byrd, which leaves the state’s unfairly drawn map in place.
But how did we get here? Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, in an attempt to seize power during the 2022 election, pushed the legislature to pass a discriminatory congressional map that unnecessarily divided Black voters across multiple congressional districts, diminishing the power of those voters by preventing them from electing a candidate of their choice in the state’s 5th Congressional District.
Our affiliate, the National Redistricting Foundation, initiated a lawsuit right away, taking Florida to court to restore the power of Black Floridians by challenging the unconstitutional gerrymander, which has now been allowed to stand for the past two elections – even though it blatantly violates the Florida Constitution.
Today’s decision doesn’t just let this unfair and clearly unconstitutional map stand — it gives gerrymanderers a playbook to double down on their attempts to take power away from voters.
All On The Line is working across the country to fight for equal representation and fair maps, and we can’t do it without grassroots support from people like you.
