Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem's deadly mishandling of the tragic flooding in Texas has cost lives. She should resign.

Last week, we saw at least 130 Americans lose their lives and thousands of others have their communities upended after devastating flooding.

But despite the natural disaster, there were man-made ones too: New reporting shows that desperately needed resources for search and rescue operations were delayed thanks to a new rule created by Kristi Noem.

That rule requires her personal sign-off on all FEMA contracts or grants worth more than $100,000, significantly slowing down processes involved in emergency response. The proof that this needless rule made a difference is there: Only 16% of calls were being answered by FEMA three days after the flood began.

And beyond the events in Texas, Noem has proven that she is completely unfit for the job and has no respect for the Constitution.

She has presided over DHS as ICE throws due process out the window, ignores court orders, and acts like lawless thugs who hide their identities and terrorize immigrant communities. She has held legal residents in indefinite detention in violation of the First Amendment, and has arrested dozens of US citizens as if they were undocumented.

We even saw a fellow US Senator thrown to the ground and handcuffed by DHS for simply asking Kristi Noem a question at a press conference.

The truth is, Kristi Noem was never qualified for this job, and only a few months into this new administration she has proven her incompetence. She must resign.
