President Trump’s rescissions package is a disgrace. It enacts $9 billion in DOGE funding cuts for critical programs. It defunds the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which will not only hurt WHRO and WHRV in Hampton Roads, but those cuts will also hurt many rural and underserved communities all over the country. It cuts foreign aid that will continue to dismantle our standing around the world and leave countless without the help they need. 

They want us to think that they're being fiscally responsible. But remember they just added more than $3.4 trillion to the national debt with their Big Ugly Bill that throws 17 million people off their health care to help give tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations. Just 1% of $3.4 trillion is $34 billion, so they are prancing around like peacocks, as if cleaning up less than 1% of the mess they caused is something worth bragging about. 

I truly hope that my Republican colleagues will take a moment to watch a little Sesame Street before they gut its funding. Maybe they’ll learn some basic arithmetic and realize that going after Big Bird and Elmo isn't what our country needs.
