| Center Happenings Updates from The NYC LGBT Community Center | | | | The Center continues to affirm the wide range of experiences in our community and the ways disability compounds the discrimination and stress faced by LGBTQ+ individuals. The Human Rights Campaign Foundation reports that LGBTQ+ adults are 50% more likely to self-report a disability compared with cisgender heterosexual adults. These disabilities range from impairments of cognition, to mobility,
to vision and hearing, to independent living itself.
Equity for our community means freedom for our bodies and minds to exist in their fullness — experiencing the truth of our attractions, the integrity of how we move through the world, and the reality of the challenges our disabled peers face as they navigate it. At The Center, we continue to prioritize platforming, creating space for, and celebrating our disabled community members — this month and every month. |
