With the help of our monthly donors, we have worked for over two decades to advance the Maputo Protocol, a human rights instrument for African women by African women. The Protocol is one of the most comprehensive and progressive treaties in the world for advancing human rights and protections for women and girls, promising greater protections against sexual and gender-based violence, advanced health and reproductive rights, educational and economic rights, and more for millions and generations of African women and girls.
Our work began on the ground floor, bringing together women and organisations from across Africa to contribute to strengthening the version of the Maputo Protocol that exists today and has since been adopted by the African Union. This group formally banded together as the Solidarity for African Women's Rights (SOAWR) Coalition, which consists of over 70 civil society organisations across 33 countries. Together, we have been the driving force behind 45 out of 55 African Union nations ratifying the Protocol; and we are still working together today to gain the last 10 ratifications and hold governments accountable for their commitments under the Maputo Protocol.
Transformational change at this scale takes time, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the long-term support and funding provided by our loyal, monthly donors who have funded our role as the Secretariat of the coalition and the collaborative work of its members.
