I put myself through college by working at La Casita in Golden Valley — a hot pink Mexican restaurant on Highway 394.
These jobs weren’t just how I paid tuition, I needed them to pay my bills. This is something I know so many Minnesotans can relate to — the balancing act of studying and working to support yourself.
I relied on student loans to pay for school because, quite frankly, I needed to work to live. I carried that educational debt with me for a long time.
Even after finding my footing in public service, those loans were a constant reminder of the sacrifices and decisions that shaped my journey. It wasn’t until my second year as Lieutenant Governor that I finally paid them off!
The sad truth is that too many of our leaders in Washington have never had to pick up another shift to pay the rent.
They simply don’t understand the reality of juggling expenses, scraping by, and the stress that comes with trying to pay off student loans. This financial burden stops so many Americans from thriving, from young graduates to families just trying to make ends meet.
That’s exactly why we need a loud, clear voice in Washington — a voice that speaks from experience and with empathy for those who often go unheard. I’m running for Senate to fight for the changes we desperately need, from affordable education to economic policies that truly help working families.
