DNR Seeking Public Comment On Master Plan Variance To Add Trailhead Shelter, Storage Facilities To Peninsula State Park
Public Comment Period Open Through Aug. 7
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking public comment on a variance to the Northern Lake Michigan Coastal Regional Master Plan, which includes management of Peninsula State Park.
As described in Chapter NR 44 of the Wisconsin Administrative Code, a master plan variance is a change in the use or management of an area that is consistent with the area’s land management classification and objectives.
The proposed variance provides siting and development details of a shelter at the Lot 5 trailhead authorized in the Northern Lake Michigan Coastal Regional Master Plan. The variance also proposes the construction of two new storage facilities, one to store trail maintenance equipment near the trailhead and another at the nearby golf course service area to replace an existing structure. The proposal for the golf course service area also includes removing the existing storage building.
Located on the west side of the Door Peninsula near Fish Creek, the 3,800-acre Peninsula State Park is one of Wisconsin’s top state park destinations, offering a wide variety of year-round outdoor recreation opportunities.
The public can review the draft variance by visiting the DNR’s Northern Lake Michigan Coastal Regional Master Plan webpage.
The public is encouraged to submit comments regarding the proposed variance to the Northern Lake Michigan Coastal Regional Master Plan. Submit comments by Aug. 7, 2025 to:
