The start of summer 2025 has brought a troubling escalation in attacks on press freedom, both in the United States and globally, as authoritarian powers grow bolder in response to a second Trump presidency and anti-media rhetoric continues to spread.

In a deeply concerning development, Mario Guevara, a Spanish-language journalist who has reported on immigration issues in the Atlanta area for over two decades, was detained while livestreaming a "No Kings" protest in mid-June. He was charged with three misdemeanors and denied bond after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issued a detainer, despite his legal status in the U.S. at the time of arrest. CPJ is leading the charge in demanding that ICE obey a federal judge's order and #FreeMario immediately.

Every attempt to silence a reporter is a threat to the public's right to know.
