John,
Donald Trump says he wants to “phase out” FEMA by the end of the year.
Yes, FEMA — the Federal Emergency Management Agency that helps Americans recover after floods, wildfires, tornadoes, and hurricanes. The same agency millions rely on when disaster strikes. He wants to gut it.
Just weeks before the catastrophic flooding in Texas Hill Country that has killed over 100 people, with nearly 200 missing, Trump proclaimed “We want to wean off of FEMA, and we want to bring it down to the state level. A governor should be able to handle it, and frankly, if they can’t handle it, the aftermath, then maybe they shouldn’t be governor.”
But in the very area of Texas devastated by the flooding, local elected officials had previously feared flood risk to nearby youth camps but rejected a warning system. When local government falls short, FEMA support is critical in helping communities rebuild and stay safe.
Families in New Mexico and West Virginia are also picking up the pieces after deadly flooding. In North Carolina, after Hurricane Helene last year, FEMA’s response and assistance was essential to the impacted citizens.
Abolishing FEMA would be a disaster in itself.
That’s why we’re launching an emergency petition to Congress: Sign on now to tell your Senators and Representatives: Don’t dismantle FEMA. Fund it fully and staff it with qualified and experienced professionals.
This is a matter of life and death. Let’s come together and demand Trump take his hands off FEMA!
Thanks,
Democratic Values
