Progressives Against Medical Assisted Suicide Presents: Thoughts on Medical Assisted Suicide
|
In honor of the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which was signed into law on July 26, 1990, the new 36-minute film, "Thoughts on Medical Assisted Suicide," will be available for viewing online from Wednesday July 23rd through Wednesday July 30th. The 36-minute film, recently produced by Progressives Against Medical Assisted Suicide (PAMAS) and Karyl Evans Productions LLC, considers the historical context, current practice, and impact on health care of enabling medical providers to offer lethal drugs to patients for the purpose of ending their own lives.

In April, the New York State Assembly passed, by a close vote of 81-67, dangerous and discriminatory assisted suicide legislation. During the last week of session, on Monday, June 9th, the New York State Senate approved assisted suicide by a vote of 35-27. A slim majority over the necessary 32 votes for passage. The bill will now head to the desk of Governor Kathy Hochul, who needs to hear from YOU. Click the link below to tell the Governor to VETO this bill!

Bill Introduced in Canada To Prevent Assisted Suicide for Mental Illness |
According to Tamara Jansen, one of Canada's MP's, "When seeking help, she said vulnerable people with mental health issues are facing long delays and no access to support but could be offered MAID instead. 'That’s where Canada is headed in 2027 if we don’t change course,' she noted. 'That’s why I’ve introduced Bill C-218. This would make it illegal to offer Medical Assistance in Dying to someone whose sole medical condition is a mental illness.'" |
| Heroes Fight For Life, Not Death |
Marianna Orlandi, PhD and director of the academic programming of the Austin Institute, says "Just as society must identify and acknowledge the standards for human dignity, it must also define who our heroes are. For some, heroes are the activists who are fighting for our right to die. Some of these activists are even actively killing patients who claim to desire death. For me, heroes are those who stay." |

The Harms of Expanding Assisted Suicide |
Katherine Drabiak, professor at the University of South Florida, writes "Assisted suicide, even when cloaked in the language of compassion and autonomy, creates a legal and moral framework in which the lives of disabled, elderly, and ill individuals are implicitly devalued. The message becomes clear: some lives are not worth living." |

"End Assisted Suicide" is the group of plaintiffs suing the state of California to overturn the Assisted Suicide law there. Our 501(c)(3) sister organization, the Institute for Patients' Rights, has joined this ground-breaking lawsuit as a plaintiff. |
We’ve joined a federal lawsuit in Colorado with a coalition of national and Colorado-based disability and patient advocacy organizations - Atlantis ADAPT, United Spinal Association, Not Dead Yet, the Institute for Patients’ Rights, and Mary Gossman, a woman with anorexia.
The plaintiffs argue the Colorado assisted suicide law violates core protections under the U.S. Constitution and federal civil rights laws, including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. |
If you’re in crisis, there are options available to help you cope. You can call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at any time to connect with a trained crisis counselor. For confidential support available 24/7 for everyone in the U.S., call or text 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org.
